MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUNG PEOPLE

It is important to us as a community that supports young people to help encourage more open conversations, rather than keep certain subject taboo.

As a magazine run and mantained by young people we understand the struggles that we go through silently because we think no one else expereinces them. We believe this is because there is not an open enough converstation, we hope to change this. With this in mind we hope you can help by sharing and having more open convestations with friends and people you trust.

Sometimes as young people we dont quite know how to deal with all the emotions and feeling that are suddenly so strong and we often feel quite alone; and therefore use unhealth methods to deal with them.

Self harm can be a way that someone might try to express these feeling and it is important that we try to help and now judge them.

Some ways to support and approach someone that is stuggling:

  • Offer to listen

Listening without judgment is sometimes what is need most. For some people self-harm may feel like the only way to express very strong and deep-rooted emotions; and for someone to be able to open up to you is a huge breakthrough, so try not to make any judgments or jump to conclusions

  • Dont panic

It can often be difficult or upsetting to learn that someone you care about is struggling with self harm. You could feel upset or angry and dont know how to reach, but dont feel that you must reach, somtimes being there and listening is enough

  • Help them find support

Find out about mental health and other supporting services in there area. It may also help if you support your friend to make an appointment and offer to accompany them. However, do not pressure them to do anything they are not ready to do; as they may have  had just enough courage yet to come to you first.

  • Be there for them throughout

There is no quick fix. Some people struggle for years as a way to deal with emotions or situations. No body wants to be defined by there struggles so keep supporting them and being a friend as normal
